Explore the diverse habitats of Wasco County with Joe Liebezeit, Portland Audubon’s Avian Conservation Program Manager, and David Mandell, professional birding guide. We will search the Deschutes River for Yellow-breasted Chat and Ash-throated Flycatcher, explore the Wamic area pine-oak savanna for Lewis’s Woodpecker, Gray Flycatcher and Tricolored Blackbird, visit Pine Grove and Camas Prairie and add montane species to the mix as well . Van transportation provided. A minimum of $200 in pledges is required.

Trip Rating and Physical Activity: Moderate: We stop to study unusual species, but move at a quicker pace to identify as many species as possible:
Walking Distance: 2 mi; Trip Duration: 15 hrs; Greatest Elevation Gain: 4000 ft.; Sun Exposure: 50-100%; Walking and Trail Conditions: Easy: Little to no walking, minimal elevation change, and minimal hazards. Appropriate for the young and the elderly, participants with fair walking ability. Trails are generally in good condition with minimal hazards.

About your Leader, Joe Liebezeit:
Joe has worked for the Audubon Society of Portland 2013 acting as the staff scientist and leads their Community Science and Coastal Conservation Programs. Prior to his position with Portland Audubon, Joe worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society for 12 years leveraging on-the-ground science efforts to protect wildlife in Arctic Alaska. Joe received his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire and a Master’s Degree in Wildlife Management from Humboldt State University. Joe has lived in the northwest for nearly 20 years and in Portland since 2005. In his free time he enjoys family time with his wife, two daughters, and pets. Joe enjoys playing and listening to music, exploring natural areas, and of course, bird watching!
About your Leader, David Mandell:
David Mandell has been hooked on birding since the age of five when his dad took him on a pelagic trip off of San Diego and he saw a Horned Puffin. David is a past board member of Portland Audubon and served as board president. He has also been guiding pelagic trips off of the coast of Oregon for close to twenty years. When he is not on the ocean, David can often be founding exploring Wasco and Sherman counties.
